How to install your internet phone service for business

With traditional phone service providers, you can expect a few days of mayhem while the system is set up.

With an online phone service, set up is as simple as plugging in your phone. If you can plug your phone into a jack in the wall, you can install VoIP.

Your online phone service provider will attach a telephony adapter to your modem. Then:

FAQs

FAQs

Only if you like saving money. But some businesses can particularly benefit. (1) Companies that do a lot of international calling can save big with internet phone service for business. (2) Companies with a lot of remote or traveling employees will appreciate the professionalism and security of the mobile app. (3) Online phone service offers small to medium businesses enterprise-level features (like automated extension routing, call recording, CRM integration and more) that would otherwise be too expensive.

Absolutely! All you’ll need is an ATA, or Analog Telephone Adapter. It’s an inexpensive little device that connects your landline phone to the internet. The ATA has one or more phone jacks (like the ones in your wall) and an Ethernet port or USB port to connect to the internet.

It’s easy. Your IP phone should come with an Ethernet cable. Look for the Ethernet port on the base of your phone and plug in the cord there. Connect the other end of the Ethernet cable to an Ethernet port on your router of mode. A message like "initializing network" should appear on the screen.

Nope. All you need is a high-speed internet connection.

Yes! The person on the other end will never know that it’s an online call. They’ll experience a regular phone call and will be able to call you back like normal.

Voice over internet phone service is usually called VoIP. (Much less of a mouthful.) It’s online phone service that uses internet lines to transmit sound instead of copper landlines. VoIP turns the sound of your voice into data packets, shoots them over the internet, and then converts them back to sound on the other end. You probably already use internet phone service every day with WhatsApp or Skype.

Yet another way to say “internet phone system.” (No, we’re not deliberately trying to confuse you.)

HD stands for “high definition.” Technically speaking, HD Voice extends the frequency range of audio signals for better sound quality. In plain English, that means clearer, richer sound with less background noise. 8x8 internet phone service uses HD voice to give you the best sound experience possible.

Much less than a regular phone system! 8x8 plans start at $28/month and include features like Call Recording, Analytics, CRM Integration, and more.

In theory, yes. There are bad guys everywhere, and an online phone service is not immune to hackers. But 8x8 phone service protects you with the same encryption standards (called SRTP) as financial institutions and the US government. On your end, you can protect yourself by (1) changing the factory password on your router (2) keeping your antivirus program up to date (3) disabling inactive devices.

Yes. Will that be a problem? Probably not. First, keep in mind that if your phone can connect to a Wi-Fi network, it won’t need to use up your data allotment at all. Second, the average VoIP call only uses .5Mb per call. So if you have a 1 Gb data plan, you can talk for hundreds or even thousands of hours a month.

It shouldn’t. VoIP service only causes a slight increase in traffic on your internet. But do your homework BEFORE you install the internet phone service to test your internet for speed and bandwidth. With adequate internet, you should be able to talk on the phone and surf the web at the same time without a problem

Good question, especially since internet services love to crash at the most inopportune moments. Fortunately, if you have the mobile app, you can still use your 8x8 service on your phone or tablet.

Yes. Your smartphone is so smart that it can receive calls from multiple phone numbers. With the 8x8 mobile app, each call will display who it’s from and what line it’s using. No more embarrassing greetings to clients. Better work-life balance. And you’ll keep your personal number private.
